Daniel Barraud

From 60+ year old vines located in Vergisson).
"Purity of expression seems to be a consistent theme with the Barraud '08s and this is no different with its elegant, ripe and broad ranging aromas that include a touch of wood, spice notes, wet stone and both white and yellow fruit (though nothing exotic) that marry into rich, concentrated and full-bodied flavors that really stain and coat the palate on the wonderfully persistent finish."91-93 Burghound

With the great chardonnays from Puligny Montrachet and Mersault fetching lofty prices these days it pays to look slightly furthur south to the superb chardonnay villages of Pouilly and Macon. If you like your chards on the reserved, complex, minerally side then these are for you. Daniel Barraud is the master in this region and his wines are simply drop dead gorgeous. They cost no more than a decent local chardonnay and are well worth trying.
"powerful, dense and palate staining flavors are impressively broad-scaled and deliver excellent persistence"90-92 Burghound

A beautiful restrained French chardonnay "I have said this many times but it is worth repeating: Daniel Barraud is without question one of the finest growers in all of the Maconnais and there is a credible arguement to be made that his remarkable consistency vaults him right to the very top of the list. This man almost never misses. The 2009 has vestiges of secondary fermentation aromas fighting with the spiced pear and white flower aromas but the detailed, racy and minerally flavors possess slightly more prominent acidity, especially on the tension-filled, dry and punch finish."88-90/100 Burghound ( Burgundies most respected wine critic )

This man almost never misses. A slightly riper nose that is also quite pure features yellow and white orchard fruit cut with lemon zest notes that are picked up by the rich and round but beautifully detailed flavors that evidence an obvious stoniness on the stunningly long finish. Excellent quality here." 91-93/100 Burghound

Beautiful chardonnay from a superb Burgundy producer. The St Veran appellation is the most southerly appellation of Burgundy where the climate is slightly warmer than most of Burgundy, due to its southerly location hence a more full bodied style of chardonnay is produced.
"This displays some residual fermentation aromas trimmed in a gentle touch of wood that complements the nicely rich and full flavors that culminate in a racy and stony finish that is wrapped around a moderately firm acid spine that confers focus and balance onto the notably dry finale" Burghound.
