The best example we have tried in NZ. Pinotage is a red wine grape that is South Africa's signature variety. It was bred there in 1925 as a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsaut (Cinsaut was known as Hermitage in South Africa during that time, hence the portmanteau name of Pinotage). "It's pristine and beautifully perfumed on the nose displaying blueberry, red plum, floral and spice characters. The palate is dense yet elegantly framed with silky texture and plenty of fine-grained tannins. The finish is extremely long and gently dry. This wine should develop magnificently. At its best: 2015 to 2022. $45.00. 13.5% Natural cork. 93-95/100" Sam Kim- Wine Orbit Magazine.
"Bright, youthful purple-hued ruby-red colour, full and even, the bouquet is gently perfumed and lifted with red berry aromatics, reminiscent of savoury raspberries, along with fresh herbs and complexing game. Medium-bodied, flavours of bright raspberry jam, tamarillos and earthy herbs are underscored by fine-grained, firm tannins. The wine has focus, the acidity quite discreet. A seriously constructed wine with firm tannins, but showing the Pinot Noir heritage of the Pinotage variety with its sweet and savoury red fruit. Match with Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 5-7+ years. Fruit from 18 y.o. vines in ‘Zone 4’, given a cold soak and fermented with whole berries to 13.5% alc., maceration by foot treading, the wine aged in 25% new 300 L oak barrels. 18.0-/20" Raymond Chan
