A single-vineyard wine, grown in the heart of the Wairau Valley. ( in fact right next door to Cloudy Bay ) This is a wine that has gained a huge following in Australian restaurants ( its currently listed on some 300 lists ) and hence the majority of the wine is exported. We have convinced Riverby to allocate us a quantity of this wine each year. "A tighty framed sauvignon showing aromas of dried herbs and subtle mineral notes. The palate is juicy and succulent with excellent acidity providing a lovely crisp finish. The high level of concentration and overall balance indicate the wine will evolve gracefully over the next few years."

"Blackenbrook is small ( 4 hectares ) and new ( first wine from 2004 ), so its hardly surprising it's little known outside Nelson. Swiss owners Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach have the meticulous approach to winemaking for which their countrymen are famous, while Daniel has some serious winemaking experience under his belt. He has worked for top producers in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France, and has judged wine at competitions in Switzerland, France, Germany and China. Its greatest strengths are pinot gris, gewurztraminer, riesling, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Quality has crept up in recent years and if it continues, Blackenbrook has a very bright future." Bob Campbell
"The 2010 is a basically dry style. Mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, it is punchy, limey and slightly minerally, showing good freshness and liveliness and a crisp, long finish." M.Cooper

Another superalative score ( 94/100 ) from Bob Campbell - and one of the top scores for a 2010 sauvignon. "From a small, limestone-laced vineyard on the coast half way between Blenheim and Kaikoura. Intense, powerful wine with lovely minerality dominating gooseberry and capsicum characters. Quite Chablis-like despite being made from a different grape variety. Long and linear." 94/100 Bob Campbell. Also featured in the NZ Herald Viva Column.

"Astrolabe earns my vote for being New Zealand's leading Sauvignon Blanc maker." Bob Campbell . The 2011 has just been released so we have no reviews yet. Bob Campbell scored the 2010 a 95/100 and the 2011 is looking equally as good. "A blend of grape from the Awatere and Wairau valleys with characters from both. With a grassy, gooseberry backbone and some mineral characters from the Awatere component this is a powerful wine with plenty of characte." Simon Waghorn is one of this country’s most able winemakers with winemaking experience stretching over three decades. Very very classy sauvignon.

One of the best consistent under the radar sauvignons on the market. "Typically a very classy wine- scented and harmonious, with rich, limey fruit flavours and excellent depth. The 2011 is ripely scented and medium- bodied, with strong melon/ lime flavours, racy acidity, and lees-aging notes adding complexity." M.Cooper.

Elsewhere $21. Gold and Trophy at the Aromatics Show. An ancient variety grown near Alba in Piemonte (northwest Italy). Recently saved from extinction by a few notable Barolo (Nebbiolo) producers. Arneis is sometimes referred to as Barolo Bianco although never labeled as such. Difficult to grow, "Arneis" in the regional dialect means "little rascal." It is often used as a blender to soften tannins in the red wines of the area, much as the French use Viognier in the Northern Rhone. "Richly scented and mouthfilling, it is powerful and vibrant, with refreshing acidity. The flavours are concentrated, citrusy and spicy, with hints of herbs and almonds." A charming aperitive and sipping wine and a good companion for shellfish and fish. Try something new in kiwi whites.

A gem uncovered- made by Simon Waghorn of Astrolabe fame. Named after a local seaweed. "Soft, fruity Sauvingon Blanc with gentle passion fruit and stone fruit flavours. Pretty varietal wine with good purity. Great value at this price." Bob Campbell
