“This year’s release is made from grapes grown mostly in the Barossa Valley (shiraz), though there is a small amount of shiraz from Magill Estate in Adelaide included in the final wine, and two percent cabernet sauvignon from Coonawarra. As always, it’s matured in 100 percent new American oak. This year’s Grange is a wine with a huge, clean, cutting right hook of flavour as you swallow.
It’s not a massive release but the ropes of flavour-drenched tannin on the finish pull it on and on. This precision engineering through the finish marks its intense quality. It tastes of blackberry and aniseed, nutmeg and smoky vanilla. It’s quite delicious, and yet there’s no question that it’s powerfully wrought. It’s not a particularly heralded vintage, in general terms, but the way this release presents in the glass is, to me, what Grange is all about. Impeccable winemaking, pure fruit, clasps of uncompromising tannin, smokin’ barrels, and thrust. It will live for a very long time, because it’s so well designed, and because it does its thing so well.” 97/100

Launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay is the result of one of the most comprehensive, focussed and highly publicised wine development projects ever conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind
across generations of Penfolds winemaking inspired the winery to embark on a program to create a white wine that could one day rival the standards of Penfolds Grange.
Selectively sourcing only the very best Chardonnay fruit from
cool-climate regions, coupled with sensitive and enlightened
winemaking, the style continues to evolve. Yattarna reflects Penfolds' patience and continued commitment to its original goal, its very name being drawn from the Aboriginal
language, meaning 'little by little, gradually'. Each vintage
provides the opportunity to further raise the quality bar.

Normal RRP is $215. Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand
for 'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project
internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally,
now no longer a 'Trial' ! RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer
intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

"This wine is destined to be a very great classic. It is in perfect balance with remarkable texture. It is one of the longest prospective wines in the Penfolds portfolio. It is likely to outlast us all." - James Halliday

This would normally sell on our shelf for $1850. Limited availabilty due to it being in the rare magnum format- great for the cellar."It is always a treat to taste Australia’s most famous wine, Penfolds’ Grange cuvee (the word Hermitage has been dropped because of legal issues). The 2001 Grange is one of the few vintages of this cuvee to be composed of 100% Shiraz (the others being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, and 2000). Aged 17 months in 100% American oak, and tipping the scales at 14.5% alcohol, the 2001 is undeniably one of the top examples of this wine. At this stage, it appears to eclipse the 1998 and 1996. Inky/blue/purple to the rim, with a stunning perfume of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earth, it boasts good acidity, huge tannins, magnificent concentration, and a multilayered, textured mouthfeel. It is a big, but impeccably well-balanced Shiraz that should shed some of its structure and tannin over the next 4-5 years, and be at its best between 2010-2030+. " 98+/100 R.Parker
