Last year this wine came top in the Wine Spectator Magazine Tasting for 'Best Value Portugese Wine' out of hundreds of wines. In 1764 the bowl-shaped property nestled into the fold of the Upper Douro valley at a big bend in the river had been given the name Quinta de Roriz, and it has been producing wine ever since.
Like most of the historical Douro estates, Roriz has always been known for its Porto but Roriz was one of the first producers to export its wines to Europe, thanks to particularly enterprising ownership. Starting in 1815, the estate was owned by a member of the van Zeller family until the estate was acquired last year by the Symington wine empire, currently the largest landowners in the Douro.Made up of a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barrroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Tinto Cão."Dark garnet in color, this wine smells of rich blackberry and mulberry fruit, with a dark black cherry undercurrent. In the mouth the wine has a wonderful dry richness and smoothness on the palate, and a brightness thanks to excellent acidity. Flavors of black cherry, wet earth, mulberries, and cassis rumble around through a long finish." Sensational red thats well worth trying.

A new winery owned by Artadi This is 80% old vine mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 10% Tempranillo and spends 14 months in French oak. It is from a 40 hectre high altitude vineyard from the Alicante region in Spain. Artardi has revitalised an old vineyard on limestone soils in this up and coming area . Similar in style to wines in Bandol in Provence. While they are big wines in their youth they soften out into almost Burgundian like complexity with age.

A blend of Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz from Portugal, where some amazingly great reds are coming from their indigenous grape varieties. The world renowned Symington family ( owners of Grahams and Dows port ) produce this wine from their magnificant organically farmed vineyard sites along the Duoro River. This was a bit star last time we brought this in and bang for your buck its superb. Celler Vinos Pinol was founded in 1945 and today is led by the fourth generation of the family. The estate owns 100 acres in the town of Batea in the Terra Alta DO located just a few miles from Priorat and is a desert like, harsh environment where most of the vines are old bush low yielding types. Powerful, intense and great value are their characteristics. Well worth trying as they drink like $40-$50 wines.

This is a classic Gran riserva Rioja and its presented in a beautiful wooden six pack. Released when it is ready to drink ( a big bonus! ) and aged in large oak. A supremely elegant, complex red that has no hard edges. This is how great rioja used to be made.
