Spanish/Portugese Reds

2007 El Nido Clio

Due begiinning of June. Again from the master Australian winemaker Chris Ringland comes this red from Jumilla in Central Spain," a blend of 70% monastrell and 30% cabernet) A pungent, smoky bouquet displays rich dark berry preserves along with notes of licorice, violet, cured meat and black pepper. Brighter red fruits on the palate, which is surprisingly energetic for such richness. Tangy cracked pepper and mace notes build with air and carry into the finish. Leaves sweet red and dark berry notes behind on the very long, sappy and sweet finish. This energetic wine is already delicious" 93/100 Tanzer

2008 Roriz Prazo de Roriz

Last year this wine came top in the Wine Spectator Magazine Tasting for 'Best Value Portugese Wine' out of hundreds of wines. In 1764 the bowl-shaped property nestled into the fold of the Upper Douro valley at a big bend in the river had been given the name Quinta de Roriz, and it has been producing wine ever since. Like most of the historical Douro estates, Roriz has always been known for its Porto but Roriz was one of the first producers to export its wines to Europe, thanks to particularly enterprising ownership. Starting in 1815, the estate was owned by a member of the van Zeller family until the estate was acquired last year by the Symington wine empire, currently the largest landowners in the Douro.Made up of a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barrroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Tinto Cão."Dark garnet in color, this wine smells of rich blackberry and mulberry fruit, with a dark black cherry undercurrent. In the mouth the wine has a wonderful dry richness and smoothness on the palate, and a brightness thanks to excellent acidity. Flavors of black cherry, wet earth, mulberries, and cassis rumble around through a long finish." Sensational red thats well worth trying.

2009 El Seque Alicante

A new winery owned by Artadi This is 80% old vine mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 10% Tempranillo and spends 14 months in French oak. It is from a 40 hectre high altitude vineyard from the Alicante region in Spain. Artardi has revitalised an old vineyard on limestone soils in this up and coming area . Similar in style to wines in Bandol in Provence. While they are big wines in their youth they soften out into almost Burgundian like complexity with age.

$49.99

2009 Altano Tinto

A blend of Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz from Portugal, where some amazingly great reds are coming from their indigenous grape varieties. The world renowned Symington family ( owners of Grahams and Dows port ) produce this wine from their magnificant organically farmed vineyard sites along the Duoro River. This was a bit star last time we brought this in and bang for your buck its superb. From vineyards over 25 yrs old."Intensely aromatic, with powerful aromas of plums and raspberries, combined with layers of lifted floral scents, and finishing with a vanilla spice. Full bodied with an excellent fleshy palate packed with flavours of blackberry and hints of fresh herbssuch as mint and spicy cinnamon notes. The fine acidity and firm tannic backbone leads to a long finish." Charles Symington

2007 Vinos Pinol Portal Crianza

Celler Vinos Pinol was founded in 1945 and today is led by the fourth generation of the family. The estate owns 100 acres in the town of Batea in the Terra Alta DO located just a few miles from Priorat and is a desert like, harsh environment where most of the vines are old bush low yielding types. Powerful, intense and great value are their characteristics. Well worth trying as they drink like $40-$50 wines. "50% garnacha, 20% syrah and 10% each of carinena, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Vivid ruby. Powerfully aromatic, sexy bouquet of raspberry, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Juicy red and dark berry flavors are energized by nervy acidity and framed by supple tannins. Spiciness builds with air and carries through the long, silky finish." S.Tanzer

$26.99

2007 Muga Riserva Rioja

Our most popular Rioja. "Muga’s red wines begin with the Muga Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, with the balance Mazuelo and Graciano. It was aged for 6 months in wooden vats before spending 2 years in 60% new French and American oak. "A complete modern Rioja with cola, cassis and smoky aromas. Excellent mouthfeel and toasty black fruit and licorice flavors work well together, and the finish is refined, warm and peppery. Not an overly lush wine but it is generous and loaded with a bit of everything good: body, tannin, acidity, flavor and complexity." Parker

$35.99

2010 Muga Bianco

A fantastic white rioja. "90% viura and 10% malvasia; all new French Allier barriques Greenish yellow. Oak-spiced aromas of tangerine, pear and candied lemon, with a smoky, leesy quality gaining strength with air. Broad and fleshy, with ripe orchard fruit flavors, a touch of lemon rind and a supple texture. Bitter citrus and anise qualities linger on a persistent, palate-staining finish. Shows a lot of depth and complexity for the money." 90/100 Tanzer

$22.99

2009 Atteca Garnacha de Fuego

This is one of our most popular Spanish reds and delivers unbelievable value for money. With two of the world's most respected wine crtics scoring this 90/100 and 91/100 this shows what tremendous value the wine is ( these scores are very rare to achieve for a wine of this price ) "The 2009 Ateca was sourced from mountainside vineyards ( with vine age from 85 years old ) and aged for 10 months in French oak. It displays aromas of cedar, an earthy minerality, black cherry, and lavender leading to a savory, deep, well-balanced red with succulent fruit and a lengthy, seamless finish. Drink this outstanding value over the next 4-5 years" 90/100 R.Parker "Deep, bright ruby. Intense red and dark berry aromas are complemented by potpourri and smoky herbs. Broad, palate-coating dark fruit flavors become brighter with air and show a distinctly spicy character. Finishes with very good clarity and juicy persistence, repeating the berry and spice notes. This is a remarkable value. These vines are reportedly between 85 and 125 years old and yield less than a kilogram per vine." 91/100 S.Tanzer

$19.99

2007 Callejo Ribera del Duero Crianza

"The 2007 Crianza spent 12 months in French oak. Aromas of wood smoke, pencil lead, Asian spices, violets, and blackberry are followed by a full-bodied wine with gobs of succulent fruit, a suave personality, and excellent balance. Give it 2-3 years of additional cellaring and drink it through 2019" 90/100 Parker " Deep ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by roasted coffee and pipe tobacco. Lush and supple on the palate, offering weighty blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a jolt of smoked meat on the back. On the serious side, finishing with good grip and smoky persistence."89/100 Tanzer

$29.99

2004 Muga Prado Enea Gran Riserva

This is a classic Gran riserva Rioja and its presented in a beautiful wooden six pack. Released when it is ready to drink ( a big bonus! ) and aged in large oak. A supremely elegant, complex red that has no hard edges. This is how great rioja used to be made. "The 2004 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is not quite as dense as the 2005 but is more expressive on the nose and rounder on the palate. It is a complete effort that should prove to be one of the best Prado Eneas Muga has produced." 94/100 Parker
