Bouchard Pere et Fils

Bouchard Pere et Fils was once one of the most reliable names in the mid-80s. Then things went wrong. In 1989 they were unlucky enough to be caught for tweaking their wines with both sugar and acidity during the challenging 1987 vintage. (many other producers escaped detection.)Founded in 1791 it is the second oldest firms in Burgundy. After the scandal broke they ran into financial problems and in 1995 Joseph Henriot, ex-president of Veuve Clicquot (see Henriot champagne for details on Henriot)brought the business. It has more than 130 hectres, one of the largest single holdings in Burgundy, which includes 12 ha of Grand Crus and 74ha of Premier Crus land and with a talented winemaking team Henriot knew all the components were there to make great wine. Now lower yields are demanded, new smaller fermentation tanks for the huge number of individual crus they produce have been installed, new oak has been increased and a new gravity feed bottling line installed. "Of course, all the francs in France would be worth nought if little improvement had been shown in the wines, but Prost (head Winemaker)has been very strict these past four years making sure all his efforts aren't in vain. Tasting the 1995,1996,1997 and some 1998's all together it is easy to see a steady quality curve that is firmly pointed upwards....A trio of good vintages has allowed them to prove that Bouchard is still capable of great things." Decanter Magazine.

2009 Bouchard Pere Et Fils Volnay Clos de Chenes

“Pungent aromas of black cherry, licorice and mint. Juicy and tightly wound, showing a less sophisticated texture than the Caillerets. Medicinal dark cherry is complicated by a creamy suggestion of dark chocolate. Finishes with slightly tough tannins that will need more elevage, not to mention time in bottle. This is evolving slowly.” 89 Stephen Tanzer “A pure and ripe nose of cherry and plum liqueur marries into rich, powerful and mineral-driven medium-bodied fl avors that brim with dry extract which confers a seductive texture on the fi rm, dusty and beautifully detailed and intense fi nish that delivers impressive length. This is a classy effort that will require ample cellar time to reach its full maturity yet one that should be approachable in its youth.” 91-93 Allen Meadows, Burghound

2009 Bouchard Bonnes Mares

“Good deep red. Wild, soil-driven aromas of brown spices, licorice, pepper, wild herbs, celery seed and toasted bread, plus a light yeasty quality. Big, silky and rich, with a fl avor of clafoutis Unusually round and generous for young Bonnes-Mares. Quite horizontal on the back end, fi nishing with extremely sweet, fi ne-grained tannins for Bonnes-Mares and superb persistence. I would not be surprised to see this rate a score at the high end of my projected range.” 92 Stephen Tanzer “More deeply coloured than most of the Bouchard reds and overall more intense. Deep well of fruit but elegant and not overly sweet. Already silky though the taninns provide suffi cient structure. Very approachable. Lots of fi nesse in a lighter frame.” 17.5 Jancis Robinson “In contrast to many of the wines in the range that are quite expressive, this is actually quite reticent if not downright mute with very ripe but elusive aromas of mocha, plum and spicy cassis. The extremely rich, powerful and concentrated big-bodied fl avors possess a suave mouth feel as the sap almost completely buffers the unusually generous but quite serious and long fi nish. This is a classic Bonnes Mares in terms of its underlying architecture and should require between 15 and 20 years to be at its best.” 93-95 Allen Meadows, Burghound

$360.00

2009 Bouchard Pere et Fils Nuits St George Cailles

“Good deep red. Reticent, slightly reduced nose offers licorice, wild herbs, crushed stone and mint. Tight, imploded blackberry and licorice fl avors show a light touch. Lovely fruit here but not at all open-knit. Finishes with strong earthy energy and minerality, a bit like the Corton.” 89 Stephen Tanzer

$125.00

2010 Bouchard Pere Et Fils Vosne Romanee Suchots

arrives june 2012"A classic and exceptionally fresh Vosne nose is replete with a wide variety of Asian spice scents that include anise, clove and cinnamon on the notably ripe cassis and black cherry aromas. There is a highly seductive quality to the mouth coating, velvety and suave middle weight flavors that exude a fine dry extract on the silky yet firm finish. 92/2020+"Burghound

2010 Bouchard Pere Et Fils Le Corton

arrives june 2012"A brooding but impressively complex nose features notes of red currant, plum, earth and plenty of that Corton sauvage character. The textured, intense and broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration with fully mature structural elements. There is ample buffering sap, which is important as one would reasonably expect, this is a big and sleekly muscled wine with an explosively long, linear and overtly austere finish. The potential here is mostly impressive though note that plenty of patience is requisite. 94/2025+"Burghound

2009 Bouchard Chambertin

$300.00

2010 Bouchard Pere Et Fils Chambertin Clos de Beze

Surprisingly expressive of red fruit, with an overlay of oak spice and a dusty element. Tannins are enigmatic – they start fl uid and silky and then build to quite a block at the end. Sweet red fruit reemerges on the length with real persistence and concentration.” 17.5+/20 - Jancis Robinson “(50% vendange entier): Bright red-ruby. Spectacular, ethereal nose offers aromas of cranberry, pomegranate, blackberry, dried rose, cinnamon and menthol. Like liquid silk on the palate, with superb sappy intensity and energy to the lightly saline fl avors of dark fruits, clove, minerals and fl owers. A wine of compelling complexity, fi nishing with noble tannins and great palate-staining persistence. Owing to the high percentage of uncrushed berries, this wine had the longest cuvaison in the cellar.” 94/100 - Stephen Tanzer

$300.00

2009 Bouchard Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru 'Noirots'

“This is also quite ripe with an expressive nose that combines notes of menthol, spice and cassis that merges with supple, round and relatively fine middle weight fl avors that possess a sappy mouth feel and good length.” 89-91 Allen Meadows, Burghound

$105.00

2008 Bouchard Pere Et Fils Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru

"Pale bright yellow Knockout high-pitched nose seduces with scents of violet, lavender, lemon, crushed stone, mint, cinnamon and ginger; this could be bottled as perfume. Then wonderfully rich, pure and deep but youthfully tight, with compelling aromatic lift to the citrus, spice and mineral flavors. Really explosively rich but somehow weightless. Finishes with superb length and aromatic class. I'd lay this down for five to seven years. In recent years, this has been a consistently spectacular grand cru-and a relative value."95+Tanzer "This is a classic example of Corton-Charlemagne with its impressively layered floral, green fruit, lime and stone-infused nose that precedes citrusy, precise and powerful mineral-driven flavors that possess real muscle on the almost painfully intense and steely finish that delivers striking length."96/100 Burghound

$195.00

2010 Bouchard Pere Et Fils Chambertin Clos De Beze

arrives june 2012"This is also cool and restrained with a much broader range of spicy elements to the gorgeously complex red and blue pinot fruit aromas. An intense minerality suffuses the powerful and extract rich broad-shouldered flavors that are muscular but not rustic before terminating in a focused, balanced and linear finish. This should age successfully for many years and require at least 15, before it will be sufficiently civilized to enjoy properly. That said it should repay handsomely the cellar time. 96/2027+"Burghound
