Elsewhere $26. For those who like the big styled chardonnay. A single vineyard from the famous Tietjen Vineyard at the base of the Hexton Hills. 'Designed as a full bodied, oak influenced style, this wine is fermented and matured for nine months in partly new French oak barriques. The classy 2009 has a fragrant, toast, mealy bouquet, leading into a complex palate with ripe grapefruit- like flavours. A finely textured wine, it is rich and youthful. 4 1/2 Stars" M.Cooper

Elsewhere this sells at $32. This same vineyard has been providing fruit for their Swamp Reserve Chardonnay since the early 1990s. "Based on the winery's best Hawkes Bay Chardonnay fruit, this is typically a lush, highly seductive wine with a finely judged balance of rich, citrusy, peachy fruit flavours and toasty oak. Hand- picked in the company's Middle Road vineyard at Havelock North, it is fully fermented and matured for nine months in French oak barriques. Always a top class NZ chardonnay now at great money.

Elsewhere this is $21. Try this beautiful wine instead of a sauvignon or pinot gris- you wont regret it and its not often we can offer a good quality viognier at this remarkable price. This indigenous grape variety from the Northern Rhone Valley in France produces rich and exotic wine. Viognier is a low acid variety so the palate is broad, rich and weighty with aromas of apricots and flowers. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Chalk Hill block just to the south of Havelock North. It is so named due to the amount of fractured limestone in the soil profile. It is a very steep vineyard and is very difficult to work (too steep for even a tractor). The vineyard faces due north and is very warm during the day.

Normally $26. This just scored a massive 93/100 from Bob Campbell ( the same score as wines such as Sacred Hill Deerstalker at $57, Bridge Pa Louis at $55, Man O'War Dreadnought at $46 etc ) The 2008 won the Trophy at the Air NZ Wine Awards for 'Best Syrah' and also scored a 95/100 from Bob - a fantastic consistency for a syrah at this price "Co-fermented with Viognier. Strong, sweet and impressively dense wine with cassis, plum and dark berry flavours. More intense than most from this moderately light vintage. The wine has an impressive texture with an almost chewy density. Great value at this price." Bob Campbell and listed at $28 by him.
This wine is from their Chalk Ridge block, just to the south of Havelock North. It is a steep, north facing amphitheatre that is strewn with fossilised limestone. They only use the ripest fruit from the top of the hill to craft this SV Syrah. A steal

Normally this retails elsewhere at $22. M.Coopers runner up 'White Wine of the Year' in his Buyers Guide. Always a favourite and so well priced. The 'Limeworks' vineyard is strewn with limestone and in fact sits next to a limeworks ( hence the name for this wine ). "The 2010 is powerful and youthful. The bouquet is biscuity and oaky, with good complexity; the palate is rich, with well-ripened stone-fruit and nut flavours, good acid spine and a long finish. 4 1/2 Stars.' M.Cooper
Brillant, brilliant chardonnay buying.
