Hiedler, Kamptal- Other, Austria
Gruner Veltliner, or Gru-Vee, as it has been dubbed, is the latest craze- especially in the wine bars of New York. Its Austrias own white variety: although lots of attention has focused on Austrian Riesling, they actually have an awful lot more Gru-Vee planted (by a factor of 10). Now its rightfully regarded as the centrepiece of Austrias wine industry. So if Austrian whites, and Gruner Veltliners in particular, are so good, how come we havent seen many of them here. The main reason they've not been better known abroad is because the domestic market greedily snaps up most of the good stuff, and keeps the prices high across the board. Indeed, Austria doesn't actually make that much wine. But the word is out. With its food friendliness, versatility and in many cases a capacity to gain complexity with age, Gruner looks set to gain more friends. No 2008 reviews yet but heres Parkers 2007.
"The Hiedler 2007 Gruner Veltliner Spiegel features rhubarb, lime, and blond tobacco, combining exuberant brightness with a sense of sweetness born of sheer extract and a flattering creaminess of texture. A vividly scallop-like saline, savory, sweet character worthy of a great Chablis gives this a mineral dimension that will have you shaking your head in wonder even as you return for the next sip. I would like to follow this wherever it leads, and probably for as long as 6-8 years. How has Hiedler managed this kind of quality and depth at the ostensibly low end of his line-up?" 92/100 Parker

Hiedler, Kamptal- Other, Austria
Deep yellow-gold color. Elegant tobacco spice, acacia honey, mango and a hint of raisin on the nose and in the mouth. Full-bodied, rich and opulent, yet not yet fully developed. This dry wine shows a sweetly flavored finish with plenty of peppery spice and minerals.

Hiedler, Kamptal- Other, Austria
Hiedler's 2008 Gruner Veltliner Thal offers surprisingly overt, Riesling-like fruitiness of grapefruit, pineapple, and peach. Opulent and subtly oily in texture, this nonetheless retains a winsome succulence and ability to refresh, with white pepper, wood smoke, and peach kernel providing finishing counterpoint. I suspect it will show well for at least 4-5 years."
