Malbec

2003 Cullen Mangan Malbec/ Petit Verdot

$44.95

2010 Bodegas Septima Argentinean Malbec

Another great Argentinean find. Normally $19 "Deep red in colour with aromas of fresh blackberries and roasted hazelnuts. Smooth and elegant with fine grained tannins, balanced and persistent in the mouth." Argentina's increasing fame is primarily due to Malbec. It flourishes at a level of quality unparalleled anywhere else in the world. While Mendoza is not Argentina's only wine producing region, it is far and way the most significant. It features a high desert climate with most vineyards planted at elevations of 2500-4500 feet resulting in intense sunshine but cooler air temperatures which results in physiologically ripe grapes in almost every vintage. There is very little rainfall but no shortage of water thanks to the proximity of the Andes mountains. A fine, fine example of bargain priced malbec.

$14.99

2009 Kidnapper Cliffs Hawkes Bay Malbec

Very few straight Malbec's are availble in NZ. This is a cracker. "A bold and decadent wine that will be a sure crowd-pleaser, this has an impenetrable, youthful, black-purple red colour and a sensational bouquet packed with boysenberry and ripe, spicy black fruits, along with black florals and perfumes. This has plump, dense, ripe black fruits that explode and fill the mouth. Boysenberries, spicy raspberries and dark plums with red liquorice are all present in a near accessible, relatively open and broad palate, compared to the Kidnapper Cliffs’ Bordeaux varietal wines. Yet fine tannins here provide great style and length of line. 100% Malbec from ‘Zone 2’ Kidnappers block in the Gimblett Gravels. Aged 12 months in 25% new French oak 300L hogsheads. 200 dozen made. Drink over the next 8-10+ years with venison and game meat. 19.0/20." Raymond Chan- senior wine judge. Also 94/100 from Wine Orbit Magazine

$39.99

2009 Mendel Argentinian Malbec

( Wine due July ) "Good bright red-ruby. Aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, licorice and minerals. Chewy, concentrated and classically dry, with a saline quality and subtle oak tones to the flavors of crushed blackberry, menthol and bitter chocolate. A traditionally styled wine with lovely definition and depth and a firm tannic spine for aging. With its back-end minerally lift, this saturates the entire mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Should expand with a few years of additional bottle aging" 91/100 Tanzer "The 2009 Malbec was made from 84-year-old vines and aged for 12 months in 33% new French oak. Wood smoke, a hint of cocoa, Asian spices, incense, and black cherry compose the bouquet of this impeccably balanced, incipiently complex, layered wine. Give it 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2013 to 2021" 91/100 Parker

$34.99

2009 Mendel Unus

( Wine due July ) "70% malbec and 30% cabernet sauvignon from Argentina : Medium ruby-red. Cherry, mocha and cocoa powder on the nose, lifted by spices. Supple, pliant and sweet, with harmonious acidity giving shape and lift to the black raspberry, currant and spice flavors. Generous and satisfying wine, with rather easygoing dusty tannins that will not get in the way of enjoying this wine in its youth. But has the balance to repay aging."91/100 Tanzer "The 2009 Unus is a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from 82-year-old vines and aged for 16 months in 100% new French oak. It displays a brooding nose with notions of spice box, pain grille, earthy minerals, violets, and assorted black fruits. Dense, plush, and seductive, this tasty effort will evolve for several years, but resisting its siren song will be challenging. It offers a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2024."92/100 Parker

$49.99

2010 Mendel Lunta Malbec

( Wine due July ) "The grapes for the 2010 Lunta Malbec were sourced from 82-year-old ungrafted vines located on the southernmost parcel of the Mendel Vineyard ( Argentenia ) and the wine was made at the Mendel winery. Made in a more forward style than the Mendel offerings, it spent 12 months in French oak (65%) and 35% in stainless steel prior to bottling without fining or filtration. It offers up an alluring bouquet of Asian spices, incense, lavender, and black cherry. Plush, ripe, and pleasure-bent on the palate, this crowd-pleaser is meant for drinking over the next 6 years" 90/100 Parker
