Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy
The estate’s 2006 Barolo Sori Ginestra is massive and intense. Layers of aromatic nuance and complexity are backed up with powerful, dense fruit. Today the wine is quite understandably painfully young, and patience is required for the tannins to soften, but this is a highly promising Barolo. With time in the glass, the signature notes of menthol, spices, pine and minerals gain focus and clarity, giving a hint of what is in store for the future. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. 95/100 parker
Guido Fantino describes 2006 as warm, especially during the summer. A spell of rain in mid-September refreshed the vines and set the stage for a Nebbiolo harvest that took place in early October, finishing on the 10th. The estate’s 2006 Barolos are massive, powerful wines, yet possess beautiful overall balance.

The 2004 Barbaresco Roncaglie, a medium ruby, reveals dark red cherries, violets, tar, grilled herbs, smoke and subtle earthiness with a perfumed, vibrant personality. Tino Colla is one of the most knowledgeable produces in Piedmont, and is especially passionate about the region's rich culture and history.90/100 Parker

Proprietor Manuel Marchetti describes 2006 as a warm year without too many challenges. The Nebbiolo harvest took place in mid-October. The wines were fermented in cement for 45 days and subsequently spent two years in oak prior to being bottled without clarification or filtration. Marchetti’s 2006s show lovely balance and deliver exceptional quality for the money. "The 2006 Barolo Brunate blossoms on the palate with layers of dark fruit, menthol, spices and minerals, all of which come together with a classic, ethereal weight that is quite appealing. The tannins are formidable, but there is more than enough richness and depth in the fruit to provide balance. The finish is surprisingly round and harmonious at this stage but I expect the wine to close down on itself over the coming months. Marcarini’s 2006 Barolo Brunate is simply terrific. Proprietor Manuel Marchetti says that his plot in Brunate sees wider temperature fluctuations than his vineyard in La Serra, which in large part accounts for the differences between his two Barolos. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. 93/100 Parker

"The estate's classy, elegant 2004 Barolo Nei Cannubi is even more promising. It reveals a richly concentrated personality with the compelling perfumed inner sweetness that is the hallmark of this great vineyard. The wine offers terrific energy and structure, with gorgeous, silky tannins that round out the sweet, lingering finish. The Cannubi was still in oak when I tasted it in mid-November 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024. Consulting oenologist Beppe Caviola has been instrumental in ratcheting up the quality at this historic property. I can't think of too many estates that have made such significant strides in just the last few years" 92-95/100 Parker. "Good deep red. Musky, carnal nose hints at excellent vinosity but is currently dominated by oak. Then huge, full and classic, with terrific concentration and a powerful underlying structure. At once sweet in its fruity character and classically dry. Best today on the minerally, floral, scented back end, where the tannins are ripe and smooth. This producer has been on a serious upward curve in recent years."92-95 Tanzer

The 2006 Barolo Cannubi presents a more delicate expression of Nebbiolo than the decidedly virile Costa Grimaldi. As it sits in the glass the wine displays wonderful inner perfume, with pretty suggestions of menthol, red berries and spices, all buttressed by silky tannins. Sweet, sensual and enveloping all the way, the Cannubi exudes poise, harmony and sheer class. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. 93/100 parker
Over the last few years Einaudi has settled into an approach that successfully combines elements of modern and traditional approaches. In 2006 the Nebbiolo harvest took place during the first half of October. The Barolos were fermented in stainless steel, and aged first in French oak and subsequently in larger, neutral casks. Einaudi is among the properties in Piedmont moving in a direction that increasingly favors large oak over small French oak barrels.

"Good deep, saturated red. The nose offers incredibly primary aromas of crushed raspberry, minerals and underbrush. Lush on entry, then fat, primary and sweet in the middle, with superb strength of material supported by mineral spine. Conveys an impression of great size without any heaviness. Finishes with wonderful breadth of tannins, and fruit and mineral flavors that spread out over the entire palate and refuse to leave. A monumental Barolo in the making, and likely to be very long-lived. 93-96"Tanzer

"The 2006 Barbaresco is a gorgeous, generous Barbaresco loaded with ripe dark fruit. This is an especially harmonious, refined Barbaresco from the Produttori that is also somewhat unusual for its dark, brooding personality. Licorice, leather and tar linger on the powerful finish. Today the wine is remarkable for its depth and concentration, while the aromatic complexity will develop in bottle. Simply put, this is a marvelous effort" 92/100 Parker

"The 2004 Barolo Mariondino reveals the essence of tar, roses, violets, plums, prunes, herbs and sweet toasted oak. It is a delicate, pristine Barolo that offers outstanding length and notable harmony. The firmer tannins that are the hallmark of this site are evident, but they are superbly balanced by the wine's fruit and aromatics. This is a lovely Barolo from Marco Parusso. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018."92/100 Parker.
Marco Parusso aims to make elegant Barolos that emulate much of what he admires among his favorite Burgundy producers. The fruit gets a 2-3 day cold soak to allow the grapes to recover from what Parusso describes as the shock of being harvested. The wines are fermented at a lower temperatures than is the norm here in order to preserve freshness. Parusso works with natural yeasts and minimal amounts of SO2, leaving the wines on their lees for 16-18 months, another practice that is uncommon in these parts. As was the case throughout the region, the harvest was fairly late by today's standards and the last of the Nebbiolo was brought in towards the end of October.

"The estate's 2004 Barolo Le Coste/Mosconi is a big, fat wine loaded with scorched earth, tar, smoke and dark fruit. Made in a powerful, brooding style, this expansive fruit-driven Barolo isn't the last word on subtlety but it is awfully hard to resist. Parusso owns the vineyards in Le Coste and rents three parcels in Mosconi. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. "92/100 Parker

"Conterno Fantino's 2005 Sori Ginestra demonstrates why Ginestra is justly regarded as one of Piedmont's top vineyards. The wine is simply beautiful in the way the bouquet melds seamlessly into the fruit, all of which comes together on the building finish, where the typical balsamic and mentholated notes that are often found in this wine make an appearance. The 2005 is a fresh, vibrant Sori Ginestra with notable depth, and while some of the muscle and sheer excitement of the very finest vintages is missing, this is a very pretty, harmonious wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025."94/100 Wine Advocate
