Tuscany - Other, Tuscany, Italy
Montepulciano is the hilltop town in Tuscany that is the centre of the Vino Nobile zone. High altitude hillside vineyards deliver a meaty sangiovese style. These are quite well structured souped up chiantis basically. An enormous amount of investment has gone into this region and because this is an historically great area the wines are magnificent.
"The 2006 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is an explosive wine packed with dark fruit. This medium to full-bodied red offers notable intensity and a long, harmonious finish. Sweet notes of tobacco and minerals linger on the polished finish. It is a terrific effort in this vintage, and an equally compelling value. The Vino Nobile is 90% Prugnolo Gentile ( One of many synonyms of Sangiovese, this one being the local name used in the town of Montepulciano ), 5% Canaiolo and 5% Mammolo that spent 18 months in a combination of cask (70%) and smaller French oak barrels (30%)." 90/100 Parker

Colli Sensei is a sub zone of Chianti. Among the seven chianti zones Colli Senesi is the second only to the classico region in volume. This important area delivers real value to the sangiovese lover. The hilly countryside gives these wines real zip and presence. "From one of Chianti's sub-regions, Colli Senesi, this appealing wine exhibits medium red colour, gently fragrant aromas of red cherries, spice and dried herbs. The palate is nicely flowing with medium weight, finely gripping tannins and the Sangiovese's hallmark crisp acidity providing lovely freshness. With time in the glass it opened up to display game/meaty notes. A classically framed with modern bright fruit characters, this is an excellent entry level Tuscan red perfect for pizzas and pastas as well as antipastos. " Wine Orbit

Tuscany - Other, Tuscany, Italy
Possibly the rarest noble grape variety in Italy. Rescued fom obscurity in Umbria about 30 years ago this is a truely outstanding wine that can compare with the more famous names of Tuscany. From 100% Sagrantino. We only have a tasting note on the 2001 wine but 2004 was also a superb vintage in this region. "This estate, sparked by the inspired winemaking of Lorenzo Landi, is the most serious competitor to Arnaldo Caprai in the Montefalco Sagrantino appellation.

Due end of August. Book now."Castello di Farnatella is the second property of Giuseppe Mazzocolin, who is best known for the reference-point wines he produces at Felsina. The Farnatella wines have improved quite a bit since I first started tasting them a few years ago. At their best, the entry-level wines can offer excellent value.
"The 2007 Chianti Colli Senesi is a pretty, floral wine with nice freshness to its fruit and an attractive, soft-textured personality. The higher altitude vineyards at Farnatella combined with the increased presence of sand in the vineyards yield perfumed, mid-weight wines. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012." Parker

"The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a vibrant, focused wine that flows with the essence of dark fruit, minerals and flowers. The wine possesses gorgeous length and proportion, all of which is framed by powerful yet well-integrated tannins. Simply put, this is a superb Chianti that also happens to be one of the best relative values in fine, age worthy wine. The Rancia is made from vines planted on poor soils at 420 meters above sea level. In 2006, the Rancia spent 16 months in French oak, of which 60% was new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026." 95/100 Parker

A blend of 70% Sangiovese,15% sagrantino,15% merlot.
" Up until now, Caprai has been calling the shots in Montefalco, but there are indications that this virtual monopoly is going to end. Colpetrone is the property of a large Italian insurance company, SAI, which also owns the Fattoria del Cerro at Montepulciano and La Poderina in Montalcino. Lorenzo Landi, the new winemaker for the entire operation, arrived three years ago and all of his work is demonstrating unusual gifts. I do not hesitate to predict that he will be making some of Tuscany best wines in the coming years, and his influence is already apparent in these Umbrian wines as well." S.Tanzer

Due end of August. Book now. From a single vineyard plot that straddles the chianti classico boundary. This super tuscan has been produced since 1983. The average age of the vines is now over 50 years
"Good full red with a palish rim. Pure, superripe aromas of red cherry, violet, iodine and nutmeg. Superrich, highly concentrated and seamless, with densely packed flavors of raspberry, dark plum and marzipan. Finishes creamy-rich and explosively long, with a pretty violet note. This was so good I really had trouble letting the glass go. I'd wait a good five years on this one, then enjoy it for another two decades. Proof positive that sangiovese is one of the world's great grape varieties." 96/100 Tanzer

From a single vineyard plot that straddles the chianti classico boundary. This super tuscan has been produced since 1983.The average age of the vines is now over 50 years. "The 2003 ( 100% Sangiovese ) is perhaps slightly weightier and fresher than the Rancia. Made in a more flashy and opulent style, it exhibits a primary quality to its super-ripe red fruit, with notable intensity on the palate and plenty of grip on the finish. It will benefit from several years of cellaring to integrate its new oak. Fontalloro is made from a combination of vineyards located in both Chianti Classico and Colli Sensi appellations. The presence of sand in the latter terroir gives Fontalloro its more open personality. Anticapated maturity 2009-2015." R.Parker
