Nebbiolo

2006 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto

Cordero, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

"Medium red with a hint of amber at the rim. The nose and palate hit all the Barolo food groups: strawberry, tobacco, cedar, camphor, mocha, marzipan, nuts and flowers, complicated by a light balsamic quality. Plush in the middle yet delicate for 2006 in spite of its considerable body. A very firmly built wine that finishes with big, sweet, broad tannins and lingering complexity"90/100 Tanzer

2006 Cordero di Montezemolo Vigna Enrico VI Barolo

Cordero, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

"Medium red with an amber edge. Very ripe, complex nose melds strawberry, cherry, earth and underbrush; one senses the soil here. Penetrating but harmonious acidity gives this perfumed, ripe wine an enticing light touch. The most tannic of these three 2006s but the tannins are sweet and horizontal. Complex and suave Barolo"92/100 Tanzer

2003 Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne

Sandrone, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

The 2003 Barolo Le Vigne may have a slight edge over the Cannubi Boschis in this vintage, as the ability to blend fruit from various microclimates was a big advantage. It is a full-bodied, soft-textured Barolo with lively color and plenty of ripe red fruit, menthol and spices. This is an especially fresh, vibrant wine for the vintage, with tannins that are particularly refined. A recent vertical of Le Vigne back to 1995 found the 1995, 1997 and 1998 drinking well and the 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001 approachable, but still with additional upside potential. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. Luciano Sandrone is one of the leading lights in Piedmont. No grower has managed to so brilliantly reconcile modern and traditional approaches in making wines that are soft, supple and approachable when young, but also capable of aging beautifully. I have been following Sandrone's 2003 Barolos since just after the harvest. Over the last few years they have developed remarkably, and today are among the most successful Barolos of the vintage, particularly for the softness of their tannins, something which few producers were able to achieve. Both the Cannubi Boschis and Le Vigne were perfectly fresh and intact when I re-tasted them after 48 hours had passed. "Clearly 2003 was a challenging vintage. We used less of the fruit from our warmer microclimates for Le Vigne, although obviously we didn't have that luxury with Cannubi Boschis. In a sense it is a return to the past in that multi-commune Barolos had an advantage over single-vineyard wines. We did everything we could to maintain as much freshness as possible in the wines. We fermented using lower temperatures and bottled earlier than normal." 93/100 Parker

2006 Sandrone Nebbiolo

Sandrone, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening grape that is responsible for the great wines of Piedmont's Langhe and Monferrato hills: Barolo and Barbaresco. These are the most coveted of Italian wines among international collectors. Notoriously difficult to cultivate, Nebbiolo tends to be planted in the warmest hillside sites, where drainage is excellent. "This is a very strong set of entry-level wines from Luciano Sandrone, one of Piedmont's top growers. In a region full of outspoken, colourful producers, Sandrone remains soft-spoken and rather shy, but his wines speak for themselves rather eloquently. The 2006 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is made from a vineyard in the emerging Roero district. It is an especially generous Nebbiolo in this vintage. Perfumed aromatics meld into super-ripe red cherries, spices, flowers and toasted oak. The wine offers outstanding depth and richness in a full-bodied, racy style. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016." 2006 Conterno Fantino Barolo Sori Ginestra

Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

The estate’s 2006 Barolo Sori Ginestra is massive and intense. Layers of aromatic nuance and complexity are backed up with powerful, dense fruit. Today the wine is quite understandably painfully young, and patience is required for the tannins to soften, but this is a highly promising Barolo. With time in the glass, the signature notes of menthol, spices, pine and minerals gain focus and clarity, giving a hint of what is in store for the future. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. 95/100 parker Guido Fantino describes 2006 as warm, especially during the summer. A spell of rain in mid-September refreshed the vines and set the stage for a Nebbiolo harvest that took place in early October, finishing on the 10th. The estate’s 2006 Barolos are massive, powerful wines, yet possess beautiful overall balance.

2004 Poderi Colla Barbaresco Roncaglie

Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

The 2004 Barbaresco Roncaglie, a medium ruby, reveals dark red cherries, violets, tar, grilled herbs, smoke and subtle earthiness with a perfumed, vibrant personality. Tino Colla is one of the most knowledgeable produces in Piedmont, and is especially passionate about the region's rich culture and history.90/100 Parker

2006 Marcarini Barolo Brunate

Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

Proprietor Manuel Marchetti describes 2006 as a warm year without too many challenges. The Nebbiolo harvest took place in mid-October. The wines were fermented in cement for 45 days and subsequently spent two years in oak prior to being bottled without clarification or filtration. Marchetti’s 2006s show lovely balance and deliver exceptional quality for the money. "The 2006 Barolo Brunate blossoms on the palate with layers of dark fruit, menthol, spices and minerals, all of which come together with a classic, ethereal weight that is quite appealing. The tannins are formidable, but there is more than enough richness and depth in the fruit to provide balance. The finish is surprisingly round and harmonious at this stage but I expect the wine to close down on itself over the coming months. Marcarini’s 2006 Barolo Brunate is simply terrific. Proprietor Manuel Marchetti says that his plot in Brunate sees wider temperature fluctuations than his vineyard in La Serra, which in large part accounts for the differences between his two Barolos. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. 93/100 Parker

$74.99

2004 Luigi Einaudi Barolo Cannubi

Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

"The estate's classy, elegant 2004 Barolo Nei Cannubi is even more promising. It reveals a richly concentrated personality with the compelling perfumed inner sweetness that is the hallmark of this great vineyard. The wine offers terrific energy and structure, with gorgeous, silky tannins that round out the sweet, lingering finish. The Cannubi was still in oak when I tasted it in mid-November 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024. Consulting oenologist Beppe Caviola has been instrumental in ratcheting up the quality at this historic property. I can't think of too many estates that have made such significant strides in just the last few years" 92-95/100 Parker. "Good deep red. Musky, carnal nose hints at excellent vinosity but is currently dominated by oak. Then huge, full and classic, with terrific concentration and a powerful underlying structure. At once sweet in its fruity character and classically dry. Best today on the minerally, floral, scented back end, where the tannins are ripe and smooth. This producer has been on a serious upward curve in recent years."92-95 Tanzer

2006 Luigi Einaudi Barolo Cannubi

Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

The 2006 Barolo Cannubi presents a more delicate expression of Nebbiolo than the decidedly virile Costa Grimaldi. As it sits in the glass the wine displays wonderful inner perfume, with pretty suggestions of menthol, red berries and spices, all buttressed by silky tannins. Sweet, sensual and enveloping all the way, the Cannubi exudes poise, harmony and sheer class. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. 93/100 parker Over the last few years Einaudi has settled into an approach that successfully combines elements of modern and traditional approaches. In 2006 the Nebbiolo harvest took place during the first half of October. The Barolos were fermented in stainless steel, and aged first in French oak and subsequently in larger, neutral casks. Einaudi is among the properties in Piedmont moving in a direction that increasingly favors large oak over small French oak barrels.

2004 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato

Piedmont & Northwest Italy - Other, Piedmont & Northwest Italy, Italy

"Good deep, saturated red. The nose offers incredibly primary aromas of crushed raspberry, minerals and underbrush. Lush on entry, then fat, primary and sweet in the middle, with superb strength of material supported by mineral spine. Conveys an impression of great size without any heaviness. Finishes with wonderful breadth of tannins, and fruit and mineral flavors that spread out over the entire palate and refuse to leave. A monumental Barolo in the making, and likely to be very long-lived. 93-96"Tanzer
