2009 Escarpment Kupe Martinborough Pinot Noir
2009 Escarpment Kupe Martinborough Pinot Noir
|
|
This is the fifth release from The Escarpment Vineyard’s close planted vineyard on Te Muna Road, Martinborough.
The spacing of 1.5m * 1m (6,700 vines/ha) is approaching the planting densities used in Burgundy from where the
inspiration for this wine comes.
Fermented in wooden French cuvees, hand plunged and aged in 50% new French oak barriques the wine was given every
priority during its elevation and now shows all the hallmarks of a grand young wine on its release in 2011. The season was
exemplary in Martinborough with a warmer than average, dry summer allowing perfectly ripe fruit to be harvested in April
2009. It is at the vanguard of Pinot noir style in the New World and should age gracefully for up to 10 years. The wine is a
true reflection of both Martinborough’s unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemaker Larry McKenna. 95/100 from Bob Campbell who writes
“From high density vineyard at Te Muna. Ten year-old vines. Quite dense yet supple wine with savoury,
nutty, plum and spicy oak with a hint of wild herb character. 40% whole bunch ferment. Very complex
wine with strong sweet tannins that are nicely managed by strong sweet fruit. Terrific wine with a great
future. A very individual style.”
